Passive Screen

The Quilton Passive Screen is designed for solid/liquid separation. It is based on the principle of the "Coanda effect", whereby the liquid to be filtered forms a hydraulic bond on the sinusoidal bars of a grill and passes through the openings, leaving the solids separated to collect on the forward surface of the grill.

The originality of this Quilton passive screen resides in the sinusoidal shape of the bars in the grill. This constitutes a vital advantage in operation when compared to passive screens with straight bars.

Indeed, if we examine the straight bar grill from the rear (see catalogue photo), it can clearly be seen that, upon arrival, the liquid follows the vertical support bars. Accordingly, on the forward part, as the liquid carries the solids to the junction of the grill and support bars, there is high risk that solids will become caught up in this area.

On the other hand, if we examine the Quilton passive screen, also from its rear side, it may be seen in operation that:

  1. The liquid passes through and exits the grill below each bar, through the centre of the space between the vertical support bars.
  2. On the forward part, the sinusoidal shape of the bars concentrates the flow of the liquid towards the lowest point of the sinusoids, whereby:
  • The solids collect on these low points, which reduces the risk of catching.
  • The flow of liquid continuously sweeps the bars in a lateral movement, which favours the constant self-cleaning of the grill; depending on the applications, this will either be total or partial.

A further feature of the Quilton Passive Screen, apart from those already described, is that the grill has THREE gradients at different angles, which successively allow for:

  1. Separating the largest quantity of liquid.
  2. The containment of wastes.
  3. Final dripping or draining

The grill is mounted on and supported by a frame, which has the following functions:

  • To distribute the liquid equally over the entire width of the grill.
  • To collect the filtered liquid.

The joint assembly of filtering grill and frame constitute the Quilton Passive Screen.

The simple design and the robust construction of the apparatus mean problem-free operation with the following advantages:

  1. There is no motor and no moving pieces.
  2. Minimal or no maintenance costs.
  3. Minimal upkeep, only regular cleaning.
  4. Silent running.
